Unboxing a New Olivetti Valentine Portable Typewriter Sottsass Design

Hello and happy new year :)

The 2011 started at full steam with a lot of things to do and new exciting engagements.  As promised I limited my recent purchases to very special typewriters. What is very special in my book is mostly related to design and typeface. I receive a fantastic red olivetti valentine for Xmas and by total chance (you know how this happens) I found another one that I couldn't let go so easily: a Valentine in its original box.

With the various holidays it arrived today and for your enjoyment here are the unboxing photos. If you are an attentive observer you can see that the color of this Valentine is not the same of my Xmas one. The Xmas one is really red and this is more of an orange - lighter. Too bad I didn't take a picture with both (perhaps next time) but this is proven by the fact that the two Valentine were from different plans. This new one was made in Mexico and has a German Keyboard. The Xmas one was made in Spain and has a Swiss German keyboard layout. The only thing to be the same is the typeface but my third (and hopefully last) Valentine is on its way with a very different and unique typeface ! :)

Enjoy the Photos.

  2. That is absolutely magnificent. I'm curious to know what else was in the box - cleaning brushes, manual, warranty, etc? Great find.

  3. Hello Adwoa :) thanks for your comments. Inside there was the manual and a warranty. No brushes perhaps because the made in mexico version was more spartan so to speak ? Still I think it is nice and perhaps I will move it to my office - I want to use and keep at home the one I received for Xmas thou as I like it very much ! This seems a new version with the 2 protecting dots on the top that avoid the signs of scratching when you put it back on his box (which the xmas one has and this one shouldn't get...)

  4. This will be an eye-catcher in the office for sure, especially with February 14 just around the corner!

I'm wondering about the color difference you have observed between your two Valentines... it's strange that the one in the box is more orange than the other, as you would expect that one to have been faded by the sun somewhat. It would be interesting to see a comparison photo (perhaps when you post up the third!).

  9. @Adwoa: if you check both valentines photos (the xmas one and this one) you can see the difference. The older model (the more red?) had not the two plastic dots on the top (that avoid getting it damaged when you take it out of the box) I think it is not a huge difference but this new is certainly more toward orange!

@Machines of Loving Grace thanks for your comment ! what a honor ! I was lucky and yes it wasn't really cheap !
    :)
